'Good Times' was the last big hit Sam Cooke had before his death, taking it to #11 in mid-1964. While it's impossible to say how Cooke would have fared as soul music matured in the last half of the 1960s, 'Good Times' is probably one of the better indications of where his music was going. It was in a slightly more serious vein than much of his work for RCA, and the pop aspects of his arrangements that had always been a big part of his work for the label were more muted here than they often were. They were still present, though, in the slightly Caribbean-sounding accents of what sound like marimbas. What makes the song a pop hit, though, is the catchy wailing chorus, in which Cooke celebrates the onset of 'Good Times.' The same easygoing yet somewhat reserved sense of celebration permeates the rest of the song, with a slightly jazzy sense of swing. It's particularly effective how Cooke's lead vocal is doubled at points (especially during the chorus), and how Cooke vamps on the phrase 'all night' for a while near the end of the song. Several notable artists have covered 'Good Times,' including the Persuasions, Tyrone Davis, and Phoebe Snow. Undoubtedly the most renowned cover, however, was by the Rolling Stones, who put a more guitar-oriented version of the song on their 1965 album Out of Our Heads. As Robert Christgau put it in his essay on the group in The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock'n'Roll, on this track although Mick Jagger 'did really seem to wish us 'Good Times,' he made the prospect sound doubtful where Sam Cooke enjoyed the wish itself.'

In a retrospective review in 1971, music critic Dave Marsh wrote that 'at his very best, Cooke utilized a perfect lyrical sentimentality... listen to 'Good Times' – It might be one o'clock and it might be three/Time don't mean that much to me/Ain't felt this good since I don't know when/And I might not feel this good again/So come on baby, let the good times roll/We gonna stay here til we soothe our soul. That summed up perfectly what rock and roll was about, and still is, in so many ways.'^[2]

Dan Seals version[edit]

Dan Seals' version was a Number One hit on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in mid-1990, and is the second single from his 1990 album On Arrival. His version stayed at number 1 for two weeks, and was his last number 1 hit, as well as his last top 40 hit of his career.^[5]
